The transition from high school to college can be difficult. For many autistic students, it is the first time they are away from their families. The first time truly being independent. It is the first time they are having to make difficult decisions on their own, be it choosing a major, budgeting, or managing their time. It might even be the first time they will have interacted with neurotypical peers of similar age.
Luckily, Mercyhurst's Autism Initiative at Mercyhurst (AIM) helps provide rising juniors and seniors in high school on the autism spectrum a meaningful pre-college experience. Students will get to connect and make friends with their soon-to-be college peers, learn about the campus and services, experience a college course, explore the greater Erie community as a team through solving puzzles, and so much more!
This buffer period between high school graduation and the start of college allows students to get acclimated with their surroundings, experience a 3-credit class, and forge friendships all before the school year begins, helping them greatly through this transition period.
